Book Talk

So I’m reading The Golden Bough right now. What finally urged me to do it was that the last time I had $20 in my pocket, I was in the Mid-Manhattan library. I went to see what they had in the way of Thomas Pynchon (he’s close to the water fountain), and there were two copies of Against the Day. I didn’t have a problem schlepping the book, but the $20 was meant to pay my electric bill, not my six months of outstanding library fines! I really hate having to deposit cash money into my bank account, but I had to do it.
When I got home, I looked for a weighty tome that would make me forget about Against the Day and The Golden Bough is the one— it’s one of those books that makes me feel like I know everything about everything. Also I can’t stop reading parts of it to people, especially the gruesome parts, because how else will they know?!
Also, I decided that next month if I have to choose between paying for electricity or library fines I’ll choose the library because who needs light!
